**** The Gurteen Knowledge-Letter (Issue 62, 8 August 2005) ****

Its the summer here in the northern hemisphere and I guess the
majority of you will be on holiday - so a short newsletter this month
:-)

I have pondered adding a KM Jobs section to my website on and off for
the last few years but given most KM job sections on other sites seem
to quickly fall into disuse I have always decided against it.

Well I changed my mind :-) You will only find a few jobs on-line
right now and only covering the UK and Australia but I hope to have a
few more and a better global coverage in coming months.I also intend
to implement an email job alert service.

Take a look and as with all new features - tell a friend or let me
have feedback.

*********** WHAT BUSINESS CAN LEARN FROM OPEN SOURCE ***********

Are you still wrestling to understand why bloggers write for love and
programmers code open source software for free?

Well take a look at this article: "What business can learn from open
source" by Paul Graham:

http://www.paulgraham.com/opensource.html

Paul shares 3 lessons:

1. "I think the most important of the new principles business has to
learn is that people work a lot harder on stuff they like."

2. "Another thing blogs and open source software have in common is
that they're often made by people working at home."

3. "The third big lesson we can learn from open source and blogging
is that ideas can bubble up from the bottom, instead of flowing down
from the top. Open source and blogging both work bottom-up: people
make what they want, and the best stuff prevails."

Thanks to Hugh Lloyd for pointing me to this.

***************** FOUR BUSINESS THOUGHT LEADERS *****************

If you browse my site you will discover many people whom I consider
world class thinkers - some well known - some lesser known. But
amongst them you will find four of the top business thought leaders:
Michael Porter, Charles Handy, Gary Hamel and Tom Peters.

Well you can get to see all four of these 'gurus' at one event this
November 3rd and 4th at the ICC in Birmingham England.

Take a look here:
http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/L001788/

This should prove a treat especially as you do not get the
opportunity to see Charles Handy much these days as he has pretty
much retired. And Tom Peters should provoke your thinking!

********************* KNOWLEDGEBOARD UPDATE *********************

We are proud to announce our 'fringe' of member-driven events
alongside KM Europe this year. The idea is to support your ideas and
workshops in a much cheaper, more inclusive and more interactive
manner than before. Do you have an idea or KM issue to discuss with
your peers?

******************** TEACHING WOMEN TO FISH ********************

Thank God for women - just take a look at this :-)

When women and girls prosper, communities thrive, and when
communities thrive, the world becomes a better place for everyone.

In the world of international development, people refer to an old
saying: if you give a man a fish, they will eat for a day, but if you
teach a man to fish he will eat for a lifetime. In the world of
women's funds, we think the story goes like this:

If you give a woman a fish she will feed her family first and might
possibly go hungry. If you teach a woman to fish she will feed her
family until outside forces take away her fishing rights or pollute
the lake.

If you empower women with the resources and access to community
capital --- they will buy the lake, feed their families, keep the
lake environmentally clean and have something to pass on for
generations to come. We are about building sustainable community
capital in order to support women and girls who are ready to buy the
lake. Join us.

***************************** POLLS *****************************

Take a look at the result of the July poll on knowledge sharing and
enter this months poll on blogging:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/polls

221 people voted in the July poll. Looks like people think by a
narrow margin that it is more in human nature to share than to hoard
but really we do both - it all depends on the context :-)

Several people also pointed out to me that the results of such polls
can be highly skewed and I agree. However, they are a bit of fun and
if you keep the context of the web, my site and the Gurteen Knowledge
Community in mind then there are some insights to be gained - even if
as I have learnt already - you need to phrase your question and
choices very carefully.

********************** PERSONALIZE GOOGLE **********************

Hey did you know you can now personalize your Google home page? :-)

http://www.google.com/ig

You can even add RSS feeds to your Google homepage. Click the Add
Content link at the top left hand side of your home page and then
click the "Create a Section" link in the list of commands that slide
out. Paste your RSS feed URL into the field and click the Go button
and a new section is created on your home page that contains the
feed. Cool!
