Dave 'Snowdenised' in 1998 and then Cynefin certified in 2003, I have had to call my approach Knowledge Ecology because Welsh words are difficult to get accepted in an organization called English Nature. I am most interested in how a sense of belonging emerges, not just in relation to a community but, just as importantly,in connectedness with nature and place. I personally find my own sense of belonging strongest with friends in traditional pubs drinking traditional ales, camping with the family where there are rock pools and fossil-rich cliffs (especially around Whitby), and in old churches, cathedrals and archaeological sites. Born in 1957 to a father who was the last of at least seven generations of Donaldsons to build ships on Wearside in the north-east of England. I studied Ecology and Geology to degree level in Sunderland, my hometown. The newsagent said he would keep my paper job open - so I still have fallback position. I then spent 20 years in Civil Service IT and Information Systems before seeing the light on an interviewing course when the trainer noticed I was asking questions in binary. I now spend my time facilitating story circles, speaking at conferences and seeding multiple attractors as events, ideas and stories in order to create the conditions (trust, friendship and a sense of belonging) necessary for knowledge sharing to flourish.
