Here is a simple definition of personal networking as opposed to computer networking
Networking is making links from people we know to people they know, in an organized way, for a specific purpose, while remaining committed to doing our part, expecting nothing in return.
Donna Fisher and Sandy Vilas
Given this context, there are maybe four forms of networking:
social networking
- making friends
business networking
- selling things and building business relationships
job networking
- finding a job
knowledge networking
- building relationships in order to share knowledge and learn from each other in order to work more effectively
Like all forms of networking, knowledge networking has existed as long as humankind but it is only recently with the advent of the web that has allowed us to connect more effectively at the personal level that its has started to be seen as a 'discipline' in its own right.
Calling it knowledge networking really gets to the heart of the idea that I do not operate in a vacuum. Much of what I have learned has been through my colleagues and through my wider network of friends and acquaintances, much enabled by the web. The better I can link the communities, people and artifacts together, the better I tend to operate between my ears.
