On incentive-driven individuals by Alfie Kohn |
|
David Gurteen's comments: On the face of it this may appear a strange statement but I think that what Alfie is saying is that if you try to incentivise people who are inherently not good at their jobs or where their targets are impossible to meet then they will "play safe" and "game the system" in order to gain the "goodies". See the stories of the effects of targets on the UK NHS in the external links above and their dysfunctional consequences.
Quotations from Alfie Kohn: What can we surmise about the likelihood of someone's being caring and generous, loving and helpful, just from knowing that they are a believer? Virtually nothing, say psychologists, sociologists, and others who have studied that question for a decade. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator We destroy the ... love of learning in children, which is so strong when they are small, by encouraging and compelling them to work for petty and contemptible rewards--gold stars, or papers marked 100 and tacked to the wall, or A's on report cards, or honor rolls, or dean's lists, or Phi Beta Kappa keys -- in short, for the ignoble satisfaction of feeling that they are better than someone else. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator Very few things are as dangerous as a bunch of incentive-driven individuals trying to play it safe. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator Punishment and reward proceed from basically the same psychological model, one that conceives of motivation as nothing more than the manipulation of behavior. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator Many of the familiar principles of Quality management amount to an elaboration of this simple truth: an innovative, healthy organization requires that we work with people rather than do things to them. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator If You Want to Kill Innovation, Reward It! Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator When test scores go up, we should worry, because of how poor a measure they are of what matters, and what you typically sacrifice in a desperate effort to raise scores. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator Some people undoubtedly find it convenient to have students arrive having already been stamped PRIME, CHOICE, SELECT, or STANDARD. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator Trying to do well and trying to beat others are two different things. Alfie Kohn, Author, Speaker & Educator
