*** The Gurteen Knowledge-Letter (Issue 41, 17 November 2003) ***

Well I am now back from KM Asia and KM Europe and trying to catch up
on a huge backlog of e-mail and other "things todo" - the events were
great and as ever I spent most of my time networking. I have an item
below that points you to more information about what went on - take a
look.

I seem to be speaking or running knowledge cafés more and more as
each day goes by. Most of these events are free and are open to the
public - so if you can get a long to one or more of them I would love
to meet you!

*************** The Gurteen Knowledge Conference ***************

There is still time to sign-up for my second knowledge conference
which is only a week away - "Knowledge, communities and networks". It
will be held in London on Wednesday 26th November.

Looks like we will have 60 or more delegates and so hopefully it will
not only be a great event but an excellent opportunity to network as
well. Take a look! And if you need any more information give me a
call on +44 7774 178 650

********************* Honouring Dissenters *********************

In response to my item last month on attributing sources. Dr. Bernard
Ulozas sent me this quote:

"Honoring dissenters helps innovation in two ways. First, the group
or corporate culture doesn't typically overly influence dissenters.
This makes them hard to get along with but research indicates that
these types of people are also more likely to see new possibilities.
Dissenters help alleviate the danger of a culture so unified behind a
goal that it can't see when it's time to change. Second, research
shows that groups think better with a dissenter in their presence.
They tend to come up with more original ideas if a dissenter
challenges their views. However - and this is important - the
dissenter has to continue to be heard ... A dissenter helps a group
generate better ideas only if he continues to be taken seriously."

from Frances Horibe, Creating the Innovation Culture, Leveraging
Visionaries, Dissenters and Other Useful Troublemakers in Your
Organization, p. 28.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from George Bernard
Shaw "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the
unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man."

********************* KM Asia and KM Europe *********************

Well I got to attend both events - the first in Singapore and the
second in Amsterdam. Had a great time - especially Singapore and only
wish I had had the time to write something up about the events for
you all. The best I can do is to point you to some fellow bloggers
who had more time than me and have written about the events.

First take a look at the write-ups from Martin Laycock of the London
Knowledge Network who like me was one of the few Britts to attend
both events.

http://www.londonknowledgenetwork.org.uk/

Then take a look at Sam Marshall's weblog who spoke at both events.
Scroll down to Friday, November 07, 2003 to see what went on at KM
Asia.

http://sammarshall.blogspot.com/

And at KM Europe, there were several KM-bloggers (all frustrated by
the lack of WiFi access and their inanbility to blog live :-) )

*********** Conferences as spaces for people to meet ***********

It was interesting attending KM Asia and KM Europe. Although
excellent events by any conference standard - there was something
"missing" at both events - something which everyone I spoke to agreed
- neither had been designed as "spaces for people to meet".

KM Asia was particularly lacking in that there was absolutely no
where to sit and talk in either the conference or the exhibition
area. KM Europe was better though I think mainly due to its larger
size than by design.

Like many others I attend these conference first and foremost to
network, to meet people and have interesting conversations, then to
attend the sessions themselves and last to visit the exhibition
stands.

Which leads me to another observation - in all the conference
sessions - no one (other than at the vendor sessions) spoke about
technology but when you stepped out of the conference you did so into
a sea of technology vendors. At both conferences I did not visit one
technology stand - I was not alone. There is something wrong here :-)

Also take a look at this weblog item from Ton Zijlstra where he
criticizes a vendor presentation at KM Europe ... "What they totally
failed to do however was to make a connection to the audience ..."
"What if they had used this half an hour to try and make a connection
to me and the rest of the audience, to strike up a conversation with
me right there and then, telling me about their experiences and
inviting interaction? We were all in the room, ready to listen and be
listened to."

http://www.zylstra.org/blog/archives/001138.html

I think KM conference organizers and exhibitors by and large are
missing a huge opportunity to engage with their audiences and create
spaces for people to meet and have conversations!

********************** KM is for everyone **********************

I recently received an e-mail from someone who has been a regular
receiver of my knowledge-letter to tell me that they were no longer
"doing KM" and could I remove them from my list!

Of course I removed him - no questions asked. Maybe it was just an
excuse but I cannot figure out why people should think that as soon
as they don't have a KM job that they stop doing KM.

As a sales VP, I once knew, used to say so eloquently when perplexed
"Sure beats the sh.. out of me!"

******************** Online Information 2003 ********************

The Online Information 2003 exhibition and conference takes place at
Olympia in London on 02 - 04 December. This is a major UK Annual
event for information professionals, librarians, knowledge managers
and publishers.

On Wednesday 3rd December I will be giving a short talk on the
concept of the knowledge café from 11:00 to 11:30 . This is one of
the FREE seminars and is part of the exhibition - not the conference.

And then from 12:00 to 13:00 in the Association Room I will be
running a FREE mini knowledge café. I ran a mini knowledge café like
this at KM Europe in Amsterdam and although 1 hour is not long - it
worked just great! So please come along and join me!

************* Intelligent tags are breaking the ice *************

You may recall in the August edition of this newsletter I provided a
link to a US company that manufactured an interactive name badge or
wearable computer called an nTAG. Well New Scientist have an article
on its use at the annual Pop!Tech conference in Maine. It may be a
few years before such technology is commonplace but I'm sure it will
come :-)

http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994371

Which reminds me - I wonder what ever happened to the Japanese
Lovegety from a few years ago? :-)

http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Bunker/5921/lovegety.html

And oh yes, New Scientist is a great magazine - I've been receiving
it on and off since I was a school boy when it cost me 1 shilling and
thrupence! Click through to the home page for other interesting
articles - the one on "Brains drained by hidden race bias" is
fascinating.

*********************** Ideopolis Cities ***********************

By Sheila Morrcroft, Business Futures

For those of you who enjoyed David’s items recently on 'knowledge
cities', can I also refer you to work by the Work Foundation on the
concept of Ideopolis. It picks up very much on the ideas about
Barcelona but in this instance looks in great detail at the potential
of Manchester as an Ideopolis -- a City of Ideas and its potentail as
an engine for growth in the knowledge economy.

Ideopolis cities are engines of growth, although the research that
developed the concept was originally examining a rise of liberal
political change. At present about 16 US cities can be seen as
Ideopolis, and the economies of these cities grew on average by 23%
between 1990 and 2000, compared with 11% for the US average and 10%
for standard cities, and all returned Democrats -- including Kansas
which is apparently like Tunbridge Wells voting Labour! In the UK
London can be classified as one, with Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds,
Birmingham and Cardiff all well on the way.

Some key characteristics of an Ideopolis :
+ A strong intellectual base -- with a strong research university
+ Effective technology transfer from academia to industry -- links
with commerce, innovation, start ups etc
+ Rapid growth of professional services with dynamic and energetic
way of working
+ National, international and local travel links -- especially an
airport
+ High value manufacturing -- ICTs, Biotech, Specialist areas
+ Cosmopolitan and liberal agenda politically
+ Growing ethnic groups especially Hispanic and blacks.
+ High concentration of scientists, journalists, media and business
services
+ Growing numbers of people whose approach to work is very
individualistic entrepreneurial, and not corporate. People for whom
work is a ‘protean adventure’

I can only touch on some of the key ideas here, but if you want to
know more go to the Work Foundation Website at
http://www.theworkfoundation.com/ or the Manchester Ideopolis
website
http://www.ideopolis.info/

You may also find the research by Professor Amin Raj from CREATE (the
Centre for Research in Employment and Technology in Europe ) very
interesting. He looks at the characteristics of knowledge workers
and how to encourage the development of these characteristics.
