*** The Gurteen Knowledge-Letter (Issue 51, 6 September 2004) ***

It is interesting what catches my eye each month and ends up in this
newsletter. As I trip across things, I blog them to an internal
database and then I have a nice repository to draw from each month.
This month it seems to be the more techie things that have caught my
attention. But even if you are somewhat technophobic I hope you still
enjoy the issue - there is so much exciting, innovative stuff going
on out there on the web.

**************************** WORDSPY ****************************

I discovered an interesting website dedicated to the use of new words
the other day, thanks to Sheila Moorcroft.

http://www.wordspy.com

You will be familiar with the terms "blue collar worker" and "white
collar worker" but how about "open-collar worker? I certainly
consider myself one and avoid wearing a tie or a suit whenever I can.
And when working at home in my t-shirt like now - I am a "no-collar
worker" :-)

http://www.wordspy.com/words/open-collarworker.asp

open-collar worker
(OH.pun-kaw.lur wur.kur) n. A person who works at home.

Example Citation:

Home-based entrepreneurship is attracting growing numbers of recruits
to its ranks. These "open-collar workers" come from a variety of
backgrounds: lifelong entrepreneurs, homemakers, downsized workers,
graduate students, stay-at-home parents, homebound disabled people
and retirees. But their goals are similar: to be their own bosses,
work flexible hours and devote their efforts to projects they love.

-- Susan Vaughn, "It's Home Suite Home for Brave Entrepreneurs," Los
Angeles Times, May 20, 2001

If you are a web designer, or even if you are not, you will be amazed
by this incredible set of tools for analyzing a website. URLInfo
includes 101 different tools.

Thanks to Robin Good for pointing me to this resource from his

************* SOCIAL NETWORKING CONFERENCE/WORKSHOP *************

As you are aware, I run regular conferences and workshops in London
in partnership with Bizmedia. We work hard to make these events
'different' from other conference organizers. Where appropriate we
make them highly interactive and participatory. We also look to
attract new speakers and facilitators - ones who have something new
and exciting to say and can deliver in an 'engaging' way.

My 5th conference on "Social Networking" takes place in London on
the 29th September 2004 and I am delighted to have Verna Allee as the
keynote speaker.

The following day, on the 30th, Verna will also be running a workshop
on "Value Network Strategies for Competitive Advantage". If you would
like to learn more about Value Networks before deciding to come or if
London is a bit too far then see here for a short introduction:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/L001020/

or here for a longer white paper:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/L001019/

The conference price is £325; the workshop £495 but come both days
for £650 which I think you will agree is a great offer. We are also
hoping to run a social event on the evening of the 1st day.

************************* RSS NEWSFEEDS *************************

Did you take the time last month to check out RSS and newsreaders? If
not, then maybe now is a good time :-) You will need a newsreader
such as:

http://www.bloglines.com/

or another reader that Jason Black told me about:

http://www.pluck.com/

And you will need some RSS feeds to read. I now have three feeds: my
knowledge-log, a quote of the day feed and a feed that keeps you
updated with the latest changes on my site. See:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/rss-feeds

************** VERNA ALLEE MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION **************

I have already mentioned that at the end of September I am running a
conference on Social Networking, closely followed by a workshop on
Value Networks by Verna Allee in London.

In looking to promote these two events, Verna gave me permission to
use a four minute video interview with her. In turn, a colleague,
Brad Meyer of Collaboration Ltd has turned the video in to a short
multimedia sampler of what he and his organization can do.

So if you are interested in learning more about Verna or about
multimedia technology then look here:

http://www.collaboration.co.uk/verna_allee/results

Please note this is a just a quick sampler and not a professional
product. It is also not running on a streaming server so if playback
is slow you might like to come back later or download the video from
here:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/L000995/

This same technology was also used to create the Dave Snowden CD ROMS
that are available on my site:

************************ KNOWLEDGE ZONES ************************

Many of you will be familiar with the work of Debra Amidon - others
will not. But take a look at her site, where you will find a hoard of
interesting material on the knowledge economy.

http://www.entovation.com

but when you do also take a look at the fascinating work she is
doing with Knowledge Innovation Zones ...

"A Knowledge Innovation Zone or KIZ is a region, economic sector or
community of practice in which knowledge flows from origin to the
point of highest need or opportunity to improve economic performance
and socio-political and well-being."

Debra and Bryan Elliot Davis have teamed up to launch a new Web site,
In the Knowledge Zones. It is the next step in the development of
Knowledge Cities, communities that believe in a new perspective of
development, which is based on knowledge and innovation. Zones and
cities in some 40 countries are accessible by registering online.
There you will find competitive ranking reports, recommended readings
and research plans.

Debra and Bryan are also 'staring' in Jerry Ash's AOK Star Series
Dialogue at the end of September (20 Sept to 1st Oct) see :

http://www.entovation.com/mailing/sep0104.htm

*************** THE GLOBAL CHILDREN'S ART GALLERY ***************

I love children's art - I still have a box full of drawings under my
bed by my kids when they were young :-) But take a look here for some
truly wonderful work:

http://www.naturalchild.com/gallery/

it is part of the Natural Child Project, a site well worth a visit in
its own right:

http://www.naturalchild.com

********************** MEDIA FILE LIBRARY **********************

I have been doing a bit of consolidating on my website. The site is
Lotus Notes based which means it is essentially a highly programmable
database.

Since its conception most media files such as images, logos, photos,
icons etc have been held in a central media library to facilitate
their management. Buy it has been a neglected part of the site and
hidden from direct view.

Recently, I was inspired by Wikipedia and how they make explicit
their image/media library and make clear the source and copyright of
their media files. In particular, each image has its own page that
gives information about the image and even tells you what other pages
on the site display the image. This is an extremely useful site
maintenance tool but useful for users too.

So I have started down a similar path on my website and broken out
the media database. Take a look:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/media-library

The more I browse Wikipedia, the more I love it and it is now my
first port of call for information. Some interesting Wikipedia links
relating to copyright:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags

****************** KNOWLEDGE SHARING NETWORKS ******************

All sorts of Knowledge Sharing Networks seem to be springing up. Here
is an interesting one in the UK that I came across recently.

http://www.extensor.co.uk/knowledge.html

************************** RIVER CAFE **************************

How would you like to spend a day on the river Thames onboard a
luxury motor yacht exploring the influence of the river on your
creativity? There is something about the water; the movement of the
boat; the sky and all the little things going on in your field of
vision that somehow nurtures creative thinking. You can never focus
on an issue too long before being distracted. And paradoxically it is
this distraction that seems to spur new insights. My colleague Chris
Penrose Ransley has dubbed it "peripheral intellectual vision" i.e.
focus on an issue and then look slightly away and you will find what
you are looking for. This seems to be the effect of the boat and the
water.

Fascinated? On Wednesday I am holding my first ever River Cafe on the
Thames and guess what the weather forcast looks good :-) See:

http://www.gurteen.com/gurteen/gurteen.nsf/id/river-cafe

Chris and I will be running another in early October. If you are
interested in attending then register interest on my website. I will
be publishing the results of the cafes on my site later in the year.

************************* OPEN SPECTRUM *************************

A fascinating article by David Weinberger on the concept of "Open
Spectrum"

http://www.greaterdemocracy.org/framing_openspectrum.html

and more ...

http://www.greaterdemocracy.org/OpenSpectrumFAQ.html

Why should you care about open spectrum?

Imagine that everyone had the same access to the public airways as
broadcasters do today. Imagine everyone living within reach of a
radio signal had the ability to communicate with everyone else.
Imagine rather than having to worry about how much "bandwidth" is
enough, everyone had unlimited access to bits so that the size of
what you communicate simply didn't matter. You know the effect the
Internet has had on how we live and work together? Multiply it by
hundred.

******* ENHANCING PERSONAL INNOVATION AND PROBLEM SOLVING *******

Get to the future fast! Adapt or die! Be more flexible and
innovative ... businesses are constantly being told. However, it is
not businesses, but people who have to adapt, do things differently,
respond flexibly, be innovative. And we do not always have the tools
we need.

This workshop examines the skills needed, not just in formal problem
solving and innovation processes, but in everyday situations so that
individuals can enable their teams, departments and companies to be
more effective, more flexible, more entrepreneurial, more able to
cope with the complexities of today’s marketplace.
